Information Evenings, January 2012

When is the information evening? Depends on the grade.

Kindergarten and Grade One: Parents only, no child care is available.
January 18, 2012 from 7:00-8:30 at the elementary campus gym,
728 - 32 Street NW.

High School (Grades 9 -12): Students and parents
January 25, 2012 from 7:00-8:30 at the mid-high campus gym,
2215 Uxbridge Drive NW.

As for Grades 2-8... due to our limited openings at grades 2-8, we are still determining if/how/when to hold an information session for these grades.
We will be accepting applications for grades 2-8 starting January 19, 2012 until February 8, 2012 BUT we will not be doing any assessments until we have indications of space available.

For more information, check the specific links on the right hand side of this page.

new Kindergarten application procedure!

Please note: the Kindergarten admission process has been reviewed and significant changes have been made for 2012-2013, as follows:

1. Kindergarten is becoming part of our programming for gifted learners.

2. Enrollment in Kindergarten, which used to be 'first come, first served' is now going to be based on a screening of students, based on profiles provided by parents and other nominators.

3. Siblings will continue to have the first opportunity for Kindergarten spaces, HOWEVER, the siblings MUST meet the screening criteria described in #2 above.

4. Students who are admitted into the 2012-2013 Kindergarten class will be assessed in March 2013 for entrance into grade one. Enrollment in Westmount's Kindergarten program does not guarantee enrollment in grade one, but Westmount's 2012-2013 Kindergarten students will be given first priority in 2013-2014 placement decisions.

Please note: as with all publicy-funded kindergarten programs in Alberta, the birthday cut-off for 2012-2013 Kindergarten applicants will be February 29, 2008. Children born later than February 29, 2008 will need to wait until subsequent school years to apply for kindergarten.

Summer Communications

Our office is now closed for the summer. We hope to re-open at our new premises on August 22. Our elementary school will be at 728-32 St NW (Parkdale campus) and our mid-high school will be at 2215 Uxbridge Dr NW (Sir William Van Horne campus). As noted on our website, www.westmountcharter.com, most grades are full to overflowing; we will not be reviewing any new applications until we are back from holidays.

At some point this summer, our server will need to move from our old building to the new location, and the website and email addresses will be disconnected. At that point, please consult our summer backup website, www.westmountchartersummer.com for information and summer contacts.

Kindergarten complete

All Kindergarten offers were sent out today, April 21. If you applied on April 13 or 14, you should have received an email from Westmount indicating whether you have been offered a space, or a space on the wait list, or if your application was simply too late. If you did not hear from us, contact registrar@westmountcharter.com and someone will contact you early next week (we are now closed for a long weekend).

Kindergarten Full

There was an overwhelming response to the April 13 Kindergarten Information night - just under 300 in attendance - and by roughly 9:20 PM we already had more than enough completed applications to fill all available spots. As stated at the information evening, we will notify you of your Kindergarten registration status by Thursday, April 21.

Kindergarten Info Night, Wednesday, April 13

Kindergarten Info Night is THIS WEDNESDAY, APRIL 13.
Starting at 7:00 PM sharp in Westmount's Main Gym, the Parent Information Night for Westmount Charter School's Kindergarten program is Wednesday, April 13th. Following the time in the gym there will be a brief tour of the Kindergarten classrooms. We will be done by 8:30 PM.

Please make child-care arrangements for your children - the session is designed for parents and it can be quite distracting if there are little ones running around while the presentation is on.

Parking is available in the staff/student lot south of the school. There is also a small amount of on-street parking available but be careful - you WILL be ticketed if you're in a no parking zone or no stopping zone, or incorrectly parked in a restricted parking area.

Application forms will be available ONLINE ONLY starting at 9:00 PM that same evening, April 13. Once you download the form, you will need to fill it in and fax (403.249.3412) or scan and email it (registrar@westmountcharter.com). Along with the form, you also need to include a photocopy of your birth certificate (and if available, immunization records). If your child was not born in Canada, we'll need to receive a copy of his/her immigration records (ideally a Permanent Residency card or Canadian Passport) in addition to the Birth Certificate. Completed applications WITH ALL DOCUMENTATION INCLUDED will be processed in the order they are received - email or fax only, we will not be receiving applications in any other way.

For form download, go to the "apply for kindergarten" link on www.westmountcharter.com . Please be aware that roughly half of our Kindergarten spaces have already been filled by siblings of current Westmount students, so there are VERY few spaces remaining! Applicants will be notified of their status by email by Thursday, April 21st.

If offered a space...

If a space is offered to you, it will come as an email indicating that you need to reply within a set number of days. We are on Spring Break now, so just make sure you reply by email to registrar@westmountcharter.com by April 11 so we can process your acceptance as soon as we get back!

MOST spaces, however, will not be offered until we are back from our break (we return April 11). As stated elsewhere, we will do our best to let you know as soon as possible, but our notifications could go as late as April 29.

Spring Break March 26-April 10

We continue to process the March 4th test results and assess all other admissions documentation. Given the volume of applicants, and the fact that our spring break is nearly upon us (March 26-April 10), it is unlikely that we’ll be offering many spaces until we are back in April. Rest assured, we’ve not forgotten about you!!

Friday, March 18, 2011

If you move or change emails...

If you move or change email addresses, please send your updated information to registrar@westmountcharter.com , also indicating your child's name and the grade he/she is applying for.

When we're ready to let you know about your child's admission status it is done by email, so it's really important that we have the most up to date information on file!

When will I hear?

Students who were at Westmount for testing/assessment day on March 4 can expect to receive an E-MAIL from the School by April 29 indicating the results of your intake assessment.

We'd all like this to happen quicker, but the reality is that we have to score all of the tests and review all the application materials from hundreds of applicants. A futher complicating factor is that our Spring Break is coming up from March 25 to April 10.

Please be patient, and trust that we will be notifying you as soon as we possibly can!!!

High School Interviews

There has been an adjustment to the "High School Interview" procedure for students who were part of the grade 9-12 intake assessment at Westmount on March 4th. Due to the high number of applicants, not every student who did the March 4th assessment will be scheduled for an interview. Instead, the intake team will be reviewing the test results and other application documents over the coming days, and will be selecting a smaller number of students to be interviewed.

If you are going to be interviewed, you can expect a phone call by the middle of March to arrange for your interview appointment time!

Testing Day! - Friday March 4

If you submitted your student's application by February 25th, THE STUDENT IS EXPECTED TO ATTEND the testing/assessment day on Friday, March 4th.

There's no "studying" to do for this, the student just needs to get a good night's sleep to be at his/her best for a busy day! If your child is going to be absent, PLEASE phone the school and leave a message.

On Friday,
1. Park in the staff/student parking lot south of the school. There will be hundreds of children testing, so make sure you leave plenty of time to get here and find a parking space! If the parking lot is full, on-street parking is very limited.
2. Rooms will be open at 8:45, testing will begin at 9:00 AM.
3. When you enter the school building there will be many helpers to assist you in finding the correct testing room for your student. Lists will also be posted on the room doors.
4. High School students (applying for grades 9-12) will finish at about 12 noon but all other grades (1-8) are here for the full day, to 2:45 PM.
5. We strongly discourage parents from disrupting your child's day by taking him/her out for lunch - please send lunch and a good snack (or two) with your child.
6. Elementary grade applicants will be doing some activities outdoors, weather permitting, so please make sure that he/she has appropriate outdoor winter wear.

If you would like to participate in a fun event later on Friday, March 4th, Westmount's SPRING FLING will be happening in the Main Gym, from 4:00-6:45 PM.

Friday, February 25, 2011

Deadline Day!

New grade 1-12 applications for 2011-2012 are due TODAY, Friday, February 25th at 4:00 PM - our regular office-closing time.

Applications received after this time will be considered after all applications received by the deadline have been processed. Late applicants MUST furnish a Psychological-Educational assessment as part of their package.

For those of you who have applied on time - see you on March 4th!!

Thursday, February 24, 2011

Application Deadline - Feb 25th!

The application deadline for grades 1-11 is nearly here! In order to participate in the March 4 assessment, your application needs to be in to the school by 4 PM on Feb 25th. This gives us time to review hundreds of applications prior to testing day.

If you DO get your application in by Feb 25th, the student comes on March 4th for assessment day, starting with room assignments at 8:45 AM. You will not receive a confirmation or invitation, just come! For more details about that day, check the "admissions" pages of the school website, and/or watch this blog.

Teacher References

Many parents find it difficult to get a Teacher referral. In spite of the fact that Westmount staff have always been willing to fill out referrals and assessments for students wishing to try other programs, the courtesy is not returned by a number of other schools.

If your Teacher - or his/her Principal - is unwilling to fill out the Teacher referral, the first option is to ask someone else who knows your child well: a soccer coach, a piano teacher, someone who has taught religious or cultural lessons to your child....

If you are unable to obtain a Teacher referral, send the rest of your materials to us, along with a note indicating that your teacher was unwilling/unable to complete the form. While we hope to receive a referral for each applicant, we do understand that in many cases this is not possible.

One further note: if your Teacher is willing to fill out the form but wants to fax it directly to us, the fax number is 403.249.3412. This machine is in the same office as all other registration materials so we WILL match up the referral form to the rest of your child's application!

Family Day Weekend - Holiday Hours

We are here to receive student applications on Thursday, Feb 17 and Friday, Feb 18 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM, but we will not be here on Family Day, Monday, Feb 21.

Our elementary office is in room 104, main floor, north east (elementary) wing at 2519 Richmond Rd SW. Applications may also be faxed to 403.249.3412, scanned and emailed to registrar@westmountcharter.com .

No IPP or Psych-Ed Assessment??

We've had a number of questions about whether you need a Psychological-Educational assessment and/or IPP (individualized program plan) in order to apply for Westmount.

If you get your application to us by Feb 25, you DO NOT NEED either of these. It is helpful for us to see these documents if you already have them, but don't rush out to get a Psych-Ed assessment if you don't have one already, and don't push your school for a hasty IPP if you don't already have one in place.

Applications are due on Feb 25, and March 4 is assessment day!

Friday, February 11, 2011

Application season is now on!

Application forms for all grades from 1 to 12 are now available! To find the correct form, follow the "links to admission pages" on the right hand side of this blog page, for the appropriate grade level (1-5, 6-8 or 9-12).

If the "application forms are not yet available" page displays when you click on the download link, you are not working from the most recent version of the web page. Just hit F5, or the "refresh" button of your web browser, to access the page that was posted on Thursday night.

Application forms and all documentation needs to reach the school by Friday, February 25th!

Mid-High Information Night

The information night for grade 6-12 applicants and their parents is this THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 10th starting at 7:00 PM. It is very slippery in the area surrounding the school, so please give lots of extra time to get here safely! Parking is available in the staff/student lot south of the school. On-street parking is very limited, and all parking restrictions are vigorously enforced.

At 9:00 PM, mid-high applications will be available, ONLINE ONLY. Just go to the "apply for mid grades" or "apply for high school" links.

Elementary Applications Now Available!

Download your Elementary Application pakcage at the following link, or via the "apply for elementary grades" page: http://www.westmountcharter.com/pdfs/EL_APPLY_2011.pdf

The Teacher Reference is often the hardest form to get completed, so speak with your child's teacher right away! If the teacher is unable to fill out the questionnaire, please refer to the "checklist" at the front of the application package.

what to do prior to February 2011...

Application season for the 2011-2012 school year is fast approaching. At this point, it's a good idea to photocopy your documents (birth certificate, etc) so they're ready to submit when the application period opens in February. Check the ADMISSIONS pages on www.westmountcharter.com for specific details!
